CURRENT Winter 2020-2021 update as of 10/1/2020:
As we utilize school gyms for our winter basketball program, we are currently in a holding pattern, as the gyms are not open to us.  This includes our Intramural Programs, and our Middle School Travel Programs.  Information will be sent by email, and this page updated, as soon as we know more.
We thank you for your patience-

We are excited, however, to be holding a one-day basketball clinic, outdoors, at the Linganore High School Courts!  Saturday, October 24th, with a rain date of Sunday, October 25th.  Registration is open for boys and girls in grades 3-8.  Contact Coach O'Connor with any questions, or scroll down to register!

**While planning for the Winter Basketball season, we are in need of a new Commissioner!
Arnie McGaha has been a part of LOUYAA forever!  As a player, coach, coordinator, and also a LOUYAA Board Member, before becoming Commissioner 6 years ago.  He will now take a step back but would continue to be available to a new commissioner, to ensure a smooth transition.  THANK YOU SO MUCH, ARNIE!!

When this happens, we solicit the community to appoint a new commissioner.  We allow 2 weeks for anyone who may be interested to send an email to the LOUYAA President.  Please send email of interest, or if you have any questions, to [email protected] no later than Monday, October 19th to be considered.

Winter 2019-2020
Basketball season is upon us!  LOUYAA Basketball will again offer three different levels of play throughout our program with a focus on creating options that best fit your child’s skill level.  Our central goal continues to center around making the experience the best it can be for our participants.  There are always challenges to this effort but we have made some revisions to the team development process that we feel will support a better product.  As is always the case we need coaches and people willing to assist with various responsibilities.  Please consider volunteering your time as a coach, league director, or evaluations participant.  The commitment is minimal and the reward is great.  You do not need to be an expert you just need a willingness to take part.  The success of our program depends on volunteers.  It does not happen often but in the event we do not get enough coaches for a particular league we may be forced to limit enrollment and/or offerings.

Your child must be registered prior to any of the tryout or evaluation events. After reviewing the information below please feel free to forward questions to the commissioner (Arnie McGaha) at [email protected].

Tier 1- Mid Maryland/Travel information:
This is the highest level of winter basketball available to middle school aged participants with programs competing in the Mid Maryland League.  Teams are comprised of students within their respective middle school/feeder districts and are selected following a tryout process with coaches.  Two different levels are offered for boys and girls (junior varsity and varsity).  Tryout information is listed below and is subject to change.  Any changes will be accompanied by a general announcement through this website and/or at the designated middle school.  For more information please visit the ‘Mid Maryland Boys Basketball’ or ‘Mid Maryland Girls Basketball’ websites.

1) Your child must be registered in order to try out- 2020 Try Outs will be announced both on this website as well as within individual schools.  Anticipated start dates are early October
2) Payment is not due at the time of registration.  A separate payment link will be sent to families once teams have been selected.
3) Please note that FCPS middle schools have NO affiliation with Mid Maryland teams, they are associated by name only.
4) Students must live within the school district of the Mid Maryland team for which they elect to tryout.

Tier 2- LOUYAA Select (teams will compete in the MYBA league)
LOUYAA Select is the next level of basketball offered and includes a tryout process.  As a general rule this option is for our stronger intramural level players as well as those players who are borderline Mid Maryland level but were not selected.  LOUYAA Select teams compete in the Monocacy Youth Basketball Association’s (MYBA) Division 1 league.  D-1 is available for BOYS only as MYBA does not offer Division 1 for girls programs.  LOUYAA will enter girl’s teams in MYBA if/when we are unable to form our own ‘in-house’ league of at least four (4) teams.

LOUYAA Select teams will be formed at the U10 and U12 levels (boys) and U14 (girls).  As indicated above eligibility for MYBA is based on your child’s grade, i.e. U10 = 3rd & 4th grade; U12 = 5th & 6th grade; U14 = 7th & 8th grade; U16 = 9th & 10th grade; U19 = 11th & 12 grade.  There is no school district restriction with regard to these teams.

 Tier 3- Intramural

**Team development will be completed by November 19 with practices getting underway the week of November 26-30
***Coaches will select a practice night and site at our November 19 coaches meeting.
****Players not attending an evaluation session will be randomly assigned to a team

K-1 Clinic:  There are no evaluations for this group.  Hoop Zone directors Art Claybon & Steve Custis and their staff will run six Saturday workouts beginning early December and ending end of January.  Participants will be divided into three separate groups during a November coaches meeting and families notified accordingly.  Your child’s clinic session will either be 8:30, 10:00 or 11:30am throughout the six week event.  Parents will be solicited for their time preference and the schedule developed accordingly.  All activities take place at Kemptown ES.

All teams in the following leagues will practice one night per week throughout the season.  The practice site and time are determined by the coach and remain consistent unless school cancellations dictate a need to move to an alternate location.  Game sites:

 2nd/3rd grade league- TBD

4th/5th grade league- TBD

6th/7th grade boys- TBD

8th/9th grade boys- TBD

Girls U12 (6th grade) & Girls U14 (7th/8th grade)- MYBA league play.
